Sycamore School just doesn’t seem the same this year, with the retirement of two popular, longtime teachers: Joan Carlin and Harland Ramsey.

Many of us remember Mrs. Carlin as our English teacher, constantly correcting our poor grammar. Well, she ended a 32-year teaching career this past June, and hasn’t relaxed since! She is a avid genealogist, and in early August, Mrs. Carlin embarked on a life-long dream of traveling across the United States on a six-week genealogy research trip. She has had this hobby for 34 years, even incorporating it into her classroom curriculum, and she hopes to get her genealogy research business off the ground soon.

Mrs. Carlin attended Yuba College, Sacramento State, and graduated from Chico State in 1966, the same year she started teaching 4th grade in Gridley. She and her husband, Larry, married while she was at Yuba College, and moved to Gridley in 1959. They raised four daughters in Gridley, and Mrs. Carlin taught all of them! She was also very active in the California Teachers Association/National Education Association her entire teaching career, at the local, regional, state and national levels. Of course, she is now a member of the California Retired Teachers

Association and the National Education Association for Retired Teachers.

In her spare time, Mrs. Carlin plays viola in the Yuba Sutter Symphony, and also likes to read, knit, crochet, and do counted cross stitch. Most spare time, though, is spent on the computer. She has been an avid computer user for 15 years! "The Internet is a wonderful invention, and I enjoy communicating online with all four of my daughters, two grandchildren, two siblings, my niece, and several cousins, in addition to many friends across the entire country."

Mr. Ramsey is also enjoying his retirement. He started his teaching career at Sycamore School in 1963, and retired from there 34 years later! I think a lot of us remember reconstructing the bones of a mud hen in his class - who could forget that!

Mr. Ramsey was born to Joe & June Ramsey in Arizona, and was raised in Gridley, attending McKinley and the "old" Sycamore School. He graduated from Gridley High in 1957, where he had been very active in football, basketball, and student government. During the high school summers, he worked the fields of the Onstott Ranch.

He attended Yuba College and Chico State, where he earned his teaching credential. In his years at Sycamore, Mr. Ramsey taught mostly Boys P.E., Art, Mechanical Drawing, some Science, and, most recently, the E.S.L. core program. He also coached after-school sports.

In his spare time, Mr. Ramsey plans to keep busy, traveling the Western states to rodeos, horse shows, and art shows, with his artist wife, Barbara Ann Ramsey. If you live in Gridley, you may find him cruising in his newest prized possession, a 1971 Mercury Cougar convertible. Only 1700 of these cars were made! Mr. Ramsey said that it’s been a lifelong dream to own a convertible, so he’s finally "retired" his motorcycle, and is fulfilling his dream.

Best of luck to the both of you - enjoy your retirement!!
