Gridley Education Foundation

Since starting this publication one of the more interesting revelations is what Gridley students have gone on to do after attending Gridley schools. There are pilots, executives, military personnel, engineers, social workers, horse trainers, teachers, nurses, computer programmers, and many more. As you can see by the Alumni Focus article in this edition, you probably have eaten in a restaurant built by former Gridley students. Your dentist, accountant, attorney, or doctor that is performing professional services for you may have received part of their education at Gridley schools. In some way, a Gridley student has probably had an impact on your life.

The quality of the schools in your community has an effect on how the community grows. People in our society are becoming more mobile. It is no longer the norm for people to live and work in the same community. People work where their job is located, but where they live depends on many factors, including the quality of the schools in the community to educate their children. As an example, a few years ago Spectra Physics Lasers, a larger international company, moved one of its divisions to the Oroville Business Park . Spectra employees are highly skilled and have good paying jobs. These employees had several communities to choose from in deciding where to live, including Oroville, Gridley, Biggs, Durham, Chico, and Paradise. I was told that the quality of the schools was a big factor in determining where these employees chose to live.

The cities of Oroville and Chico are making great efforts to attract other companies to their communities. The leaders of these communities have come to the realization that growth is going to happen and it is best to have well planned quality growth. If another company does relocate to the area and one of its employees asks which community has the best schools, what will the answer be? Does Gridley want to grow with new residents that have good jobs and are concerned about their childrens’ education or does it want to grow with other types of new residents?

It is no longer possible for state government alone to provide us with superior schools. I suggest you think of schools as government assisted and not as government supported. It takes support from the community to have superior schools. Support the schools in your community and make your community a better place to live.
